September 25th. - BLM and Fish & Game are planning a volunteer day at River Springs (Adobe Valley) on September 25. Commercial pack outfits along with other packers enjoy this area because of the wild horses in the vicinity. The site where the work is being done is often used as a loading/unloading, staging, and camping area.
The planned work includes;
1. Trash pickup throughout the project area.
2. Weed removal when encountered. This will help reduce any local populations and the potential for weeds to be spread to other areas.
3. Fence maintenance/repair will occur on some existing fence lines. Maintenance and repair are needed to control livestock and wild horses from accessing the spring and historic sites.
4. A historic stone corral and livestock loading shoot are located on BLM land. These historic structures are in disrepair and need to be stabilized to prevent their collapse. The loading ramps are no longer used; however the stone corral is still utilized today by both the general public and pack outfitters.
Work is tentatively planed between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
BLM is planning to supply lunch.
Jeff Starosta, from the BLM, Bishop Field Office is hoping you will share this information with those folks who might be interested in volunteering. Please, contact Jeff at: (760) 872-5032 so he can put together a list. This will allow him to keep everyone informed as plans become final closer to the day.
Volunteers from all corners of the U.S. are experiencing and exploring the PCT. These travelers, along with neighbors from your own local community, are volunteer vacationing together this year on the Trail. The PCT has ignited a passion and desire in many to spend the season basking in the West Coast beauty while helping to maintain a national treasure. (For more info PCT Vacation)
Backcountry Horsemen - Let's support this project. For those who would like, bring your horse and spend the night so we can ride the next day. Please let Bill Carter at 760-8737327 or Jerry Cimino at 760-873-8581 know if you are interested in participating.
